Someone asked me where I would start when optimising their WordPress website

This is step 1 to step 3 of what we do for all our clients:

  1. Backup
  2. Review console errors. Fix them. *
  3. Review installed plugins. Remove unused and unnecessary ones.

You’ll notice there’s no mention of performance scans, optimising images, caching plugins, compressing scripts etc.

That’s because we start at the bottom and work our way up.

That means fixing the basics, the fundamentals.

It’s all hands-on, eyes-on-the-site, manual work. We don’t run scans or automated scripts or ask any questions of AI machines.

Without the Backup, any problems that arise during our work can be major. With the backup they are just minor hiccups.

Without fixing code errors we ignore the cause of delays and possible knock-on problems. Fixing these errors guarantees we’re looking at a clean site at later steps.

Without reviewing plugins we ignore security leaks, code conflicts and unused and useless code. A plugin review and cleanup means the site runs only code needed for the required functionality.

That’s it.

After these three steps we’re dealing with a cleaner site.

Then we can get on with the finer technical details of caching, compression, combining scripts, image optimisation etc.

It’s all about the fundamentals.
